FAQ’s

Do I need to wash my fiber before I send it to you?

We always scour fiber before processing to make sure it’s clean and safe for our equipment—and for the planet. Fiber that’s been washed with residue-leaving soaps or not fully cleaned can affect the final product, so we handle that step in-house.

What form of Fiber can I receive?

Depending on the fiber we receive, we can process your fiber to a cloud, to roving (loose roving, or bumps if possible), or card to batts.
All waste fiber will be returned with your finished order.

Please skirt your fiber.

Fleeces that come to us not skirted will be assessed an additional $25 per fleece.
Far better for you to choose what to discard and what to keep!
Debris (hoof trimings, etc.) = $30/fleece
Extra-Handling Fee (semi-matted, color separation, etc. = $5/lb.)
Severely matted or felted fleeces cannot be processed.

While we love all kinds of fiber animals, dog hair is usually too short for our machines to handle properly, so we’re not able to process it.

Do you accept all fibers?

We are able to process a variety of fibers; however, we are not able remove the guard hair from multi-coated animals. The fibers will be processed together which may yield a coarser roving.

Suri alpaca fiber – we do process Suri to roving, either pure Suri or we can blend it with a touch of wool if you prefer. We are able to work with the longer fibers without cutting.

We do Huacaya into roving if the fiber is at least 3″ in length. Shorter fibers can be carded to a cloud, a batt or core spun. Suri is a slick fiber and will generally hold together through the roving process, however you can add in wool to either Huacaya or Suri if you prefer.

Llama processes well either alone or as a blended fiber.

What length of fiber can you process?

We are happy to process fiber between 3″ to 12″ in length. Shorter fibers can be picked to a cloud or be carded to a batt. Batts from short fibers will contain neps.

What is the loss ratio in fiber?

What Happens to Short Fiber During Carding?
Each time your fiber runs through the carder, some short fibers—like neps and second cuts—get cast off. These bits aren’t ideal for roving or spinning, but they’re not entirely useless! We can take those less than ideal fibers and change them in to core spun.

You can repurpose them for stuffing, dryer ball cores, mulch, or even offer them to wildlife for nesting. Sometimes fiber arrives with too much dirt or debris for us to clean and card properly, so we’re unable to process it and will return it.

How do I get my fiber to you?

While we prefer to meet with you in person to assess the fiber and discus the expected outcomes, you may also ship your fiber to us. Please contact us prior so we can schedule appropriately.

Can I get 100% alpaca roving?

Infested fiber is disposed of or returned immediately at the owner’s expense.
If you cannot pull apart the fiber with light to moderate effort, it will be too matted to process.
We will reject fiber with too many burrs or wood shavings. Vegetable matter will remain in the fiber throughout processing.
